How the generator works

Type your name or brand and pick a niche, or type your own. An AI model writes up to 24 ideas per press, and each press gives you a new list. Every idea is filtered against Instagram's rules, then looked up on Instagram and marked Taken or Looks free. If a lookup fails, you get a Check button instead of a guess. Press Copy on the one you like.

"Looks free" means no account uses the name right now. Names Instagram holds back from banned or deleted accounts look the same from outside, so Edit profile in the app has the final word.

What you type is sent to OpenAI to write the ideas. If that's down, a built-in mixer still gives you a list.

Why every idea gets checked

Most generators leave the checking to you, and a lot of names are gone. Of 680 names looked up with our tools between 30 September and 14 October 2026, 41% belonged to an account. Names with a dot or _ were taken 39% of the time, against 46% for letters and numbers only.

Short one-word handles like bakes or travel went years ago, so expect to add a dot, a word in front or your niche.

What makes a good Instagram username?

One people remember after hearing it once. Keep it short, easy to spell out loud and the same on your other platforms. One word about what you post (bakes, runs, studio) helps people find you, more than one starts to look like spam. Say it out loud: if you'd have to spell it for someone, try again.

Avoid:

  • Long strings of numbers. They look like spam and are hard to tag.
  • Stacked _ and periods, like mayabakes__.
  • Letters that look alike, like l and 1 or O and 0.
  • A brand or famous person you're not. Instagram can take the name away.
  • Your birth year or street. Your handle is public.
@mayabakes taken and @mayabakes2 crossed out, then the bakery's profile as @mayabakes.london with Follow, Message and Directions buttons

Picking a name for a business

Use the name on your sign. If it's taken, add what you do or where you are, not a number: mayabakes.london, not mayabakes2. The generator doesn't check trademarks, so search the name before you print it on anything. Have a name already? Check a name at the top of this page looks it up and lists Instagram's naming rules.

Frequently asked

Is this Instagram username generator free?

Yes, with no login. You get 40 idea lists and 90 name checks a day. Every idea checked on a list uses one of the 90, and so does every name you check under Check a name.

Can I edit an idea?

Yes. Copy it, change what you like, then check your version under Check a name.

Does the account owner see that I checked their name?

No. Checking a name only reads the public profile. Nobody is notified.

Can I change my username later?

Yes, in Edit profile. Followers and posts stay, but your profile link changes and old @mentions don't follow you.
