Instagram never tells you when someone blocks you, and it deliberately makes a block look identical to an account that was deleted or deactivated. There is no notification and no indicator — but there is a reliable way to tell the difference, and it takes about a minute.
The quick test
Search for the person's username while logged into your own account. Then check the same username while logged out — open a private or incognito browser window and go to instagram.com/theirusername.
- Profile is missing for you, but loads when logged out → you are blocked.
- Profile is missing both ways → the account was deleted, deactivated, or renamed. Not a block.
- Profile loads for you but shows no posts → they went private, or they restricted you. Not a block.
That single comparison answers it, because a block is the only state where the account is visible to the public but invisible to you specifically.

The signs, in order of reliability
Their profile shows "User not found"
Search their exact username from your account. If nothing comes back, that is consistent with a block — but on its own it proves nothing, because a deleted account looks the same. Always pair it with the logged-out check.
Old conversations lose their profile picture
Direct messages you exchanged do not disappear when someone blocks you. The thread stays, the messages stay, but their profile photo goes grey and their name may stop linking anywhere. That combination — thread present, avatar gone — is a strong signal.
Their likes and comments vanish from your posts
Blocking removes their past interactions from your view. If you remember them commenting on a post and the comment is no longer there, and their profile is unreachable, the picture is fairly clear.
You cannot send them a message
Typing into the old thread will either fail to send or sit unsent. Instagram gives no error explaining why.
A mutual friend can see them and you cannot
The most conclusive check short of the logged-out test. If someone else's account loads the profile normally on their phone while yours cannot find it at all, the difference is you.
Blocked, restricted, or just unfollowed?
These get confused constantly and they are very different.
- Blocked — you cannot see their profile, posts, stories or comments at all. Their account effectively does not exist for you.
- Restricted — you can still see everything, but your comments on their posts are visible only to you unless they approve them, and your messages go to a request folder they may never open. Nothing looks wrong from your side, which is the point of it.
- Unfollowed — you can see their public profile normally, you simply do not get their posts in your feed any more.
- Went private — profile loads, follower count shows, posts are hidden behind a follow request.
Restricted is the one people most often mistake for a block, because it is designed to be invisible. If you can load their profile at all, you are not blocked.
Does Instagram notify you if someone blocks you?
No. There is no notification, no message, and no marker anywhere in the app. Instagram treats blocking as private to the person doing it, which is why every method above is inference rather than confirmation.
Can you tell who blocked you without checking one by one?
Not reliably, and this is worth being blunt about because a whole category of apps claims otherwise. Instagram does not expose a "who blocked me" list to anyone, so any app promising one is either guessing from your follower list or asking for your login so it can check accounts as you. Handing your credentials to a third party to answer a question you can answer yourself in a private browser window is a bad trade.
What happens when someone blocks you
- You disappear from each other's follower and following lists, and the follow does not come back if they unblock you.
- Their posts, stories, reels and comments become invisible to you, and yours to them.
- Existing DM threads stay in both inboxes, but new messages cannot be sent.
- Tags and mentions between you stop working.
If they unblock you later, you will be able to see the profile again, but you will not be following each other and there is no notification about that either.
If you think you were blocked by mistake
There is no appeal, and no way to contact someone through Instagram once blocked — that is the entire function. The only routes are a different platform or a mutual acquaintance, and it is worth considering that the block was deliberate.
When it is not a block at all
Before concluding anything, rule out the ordinary explanations. Accounts get deactivated temporarily and come back. Usernames change, which breaks old links and search results while the account continues to exist. Instagram occasionally hides accounts under review. And an account disabled for policy violations disappears for everyone, not just you — the logged-out check catches all of these.
