Instagram gives you no switch labelled "hide my followers". What it gives you instead is a set of narrower controls that, used together, get most people to the outcome they actually want. This covers what each one does, what it cannot do, and which combination fits the reason you are asking.

There is no setting that hides your follower list from everyone while your account stays public. Your options are:
- Go private. Only approved followers see your follower and following lists. This is the only way to hide them completely.

- Restrict or block specific people so those individuals cannot browse your lists.
- Remove followers you would rather not have there at all.

How to hide followers on Instagram by going private
Going private is the complete version. Your follower list, your following list and your posts all become visible only to accounts you approve.
- Open your profile and tap the menu (three lines, top right).
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Account privacy.
- Turn on Private account and confirm.
Existing followers stay. New people have to request. Anyone who is not a follower sees your profile photo, bio, and nothing else — no posts, no follower list, no following list.
The obvious cost: private accounts do not appear in Explore, hashtags stop bringing people in, and nothing you post can be shared onward. If your account exists to be found, this is a heavy price for privacy you might get another way.
How to hide your following list on Instagram from followers
This is the question people usually mean, and the honest answer is that Instagram does not offer it as a standalone control. On a public account, anyone who can see your profile can see who you follow. There is no toggle that hides the following list while leaving the account public.
What you can do instead:
- Unfollow and use a close-friends list or saved collections to keep track of accounts privately. Saved posts are visible only to you.
- Restrict the specific people whose attention you are trying to avoid, covered below.

If you have seen a site or app claiming it can hide your following list on a public account, it is either describing the private-account setting in different words or trying to get your login. There is no hidden setting.
How to hide followers on Instagram from friends, or from one person
When the goal is one specific person rather than the general public, you have better tools than going private.
Restrict
Restricting someone is deliberately quiet — they are not told. Their comments on your posts become visible only to them unless you approve, their messages move to a separate request folder, and they cannot see when you are online. Go to their profile, tap the three dots, and choose Restrict.
Block
Blocking is complete: they cannot see your profile, your posts, your follower list or your following list, and they cannot find your account in search. They are not notified, though the sudden disappearance tends to be noticed.
Remove a follower
You can take someone off your follower list without blocking them. Open your followers list, tap Remove next to the account, and confirm. They are not notified. They can follow again unless you also block them, so this suits an unwanted follower rather than a determined one.
How to hide followers and following on Instagram at the same time
Only the private setting does both at once. Turning it on hides both lists from everyone outside your approved followers, in a single step. There is no way to hide one and show the other.
A middle path worth knowing: you can go private temporarily. Some people switch to private for a while — during a job search, after a breakup, while an account is being cleaned up — and switch back afterwards. The setting is reversible at any time and costs nothing but reach while it is on.
Can you hide the follower count?

- "One person keeps checking my activity." → Restrict or block them. Going private would not help if they already follow you.
